California Dreamin….

I am going to begin fishing from my kayak in oceanside ca, (only about as far out as the pier is,,,,too scared of deep water,,,ha ha ha) and I have no clue what I will catch. I am used to fishing in lakes, rivers and streams in central california. I would like to know what type of bait and tackle to use to catch some fish I can take home to eat! :-) I have been researching what types of fish are legal and illegal to keep. I have also fished off the pier and in the harbor, along with some surf fishing and have had absolutely no luck so far,,,,so I am at a total loss. Thank you, Shauna Hoskins

If you have a Kayak, the congratulations. You have the ultimate boat for anything. I love my Kayaks.

Best places to launch are Mission Bay, or or SD Harbor. But be careful. There is a lot of Jet Ski and powerboat traffic on the weekends. Avoid launching on the beaches, such as La Jolla. The waves are a bit too much, unless you want to go Kayak surfing (a fun activity in it’s own right). There is one beach that is OK to launch from. Try Carlsbad State Beach, just north of the campgrounds, and south of the inlets.

Try fishing the jetties, and off of the piers. Fishing for Sand Bass, Corbina, Mackerel, Bonita, Sharks, Rays, and Halibut. Scampi lures have been working good, as well as jigs, and live bait such as shrimp, squid, bloodworms, anchovies and smelts. Lately, there have been a lot of guitarfish caught from the piers, as well.

Happy Fishing.
