Surf’s Up

Dan, we are going to st Bart the end of this July and I want to do some surf fishing. I am bringing 4 fishing rods and I was wondering if you had any advice on what lures and bait to use…… Thanks in advance!

The best live baits are:
1. Squid-this is the absolute best bait for surf-fishing. it is tough, has a strong odor to attract fish from a distance, and makes up a major portion of most marine fish. It’s the saltwater version of using nightcrawlers. Croakers, Spots, Redfish, Croakers, Speckled Trout, Flounder and Bluefish all eat squid on a regular basis. Fish it on a bottom rig cast out beyond the breakers.
2. Shrimp-the next best bait. Again, shrimp make up a major protion of most marine fishes diet, such as Speckled Trout, Flounder, Bluefish, Drum, Redfish, Croakers, Spots, and even smaller Striped Bass. It does not stay on the hook as good as squid, so check your bait often to make sure it is still there.
3. For larger fish, cut mullet is tops. It will attract bluefish, Striped Bass, Sea Bass, large Cobia, as well as stingrays, sharks, barracuda, and crabs. Check your bait often.

Any lure that represents crabs, baitfish, squid or bloodworms will work nicely in the surf.

Happy Fishing.
