Saltwater Beginning Setup

As a beginner what saltwater fishing equipment do you think I need?

The choice of beginning fishing equipment is really primarily dependant on the species of fish you will be targeting and the method of fishing you will be using. I will try to outline a good starting point however that will give you several options in this regard. The fishing reel is the most important choice you will make. If your budget is limited it is much better to skimp on the quality of rod than it is to use a low quality fishing reel. You should select a reel with a smoothly running drag. You also need a somewhat large reel, saltwater fish fight very hard. You also will be using light fluorocarbon line. This combination of factors will allow even a medium size fish to be able to rip over a hundred yards of line off your reel. Play it safe and select a high quality reel that holds at least two to three hundred yards of line. A medium to heavy action fiberglass rod is fine for starters. Unless you are fishing for very large species of fish it is not required to have a rod that costs a great deal of money. I have caught fish in excess of one hundred pounds with a rod that cost less than twenty dollars. You will need twelve pound fluorocarbon fishing line. Fluorocarbon line is best due to its invisibility properties in saltwater. You can also use braided line that does not stretch and attach a two to three foot section of fluorocarbon line as a leader.
