Pier fishing setup

Moved to Seal Beach, Ca. Would like to surprise my husband with an inexpensive set-up. We have fished some 25 years ago in mid west ponds but have no equipment. So what do I need to get him. Pier fishing looks like fun and is only 1.3 miles from our new home. Please don’t me to ask other fishermen. He is always with me. He just retired and remarked when we went to eat at a resturant at the end of the pier that he would like to do this. Thanks so much. Joy

Hi Joy, I will suggest the following setup for saltwater pier fishing. I will keep in mind you are on a budget and recommend the following: 1) A ten foot medium to heavy action rod will serve several purposes. First it can give your husband the casting ability to fish a long distance from the pier in deeper water. It will also allow him to maneuver a fish around the pier pilings when fishing just off the pier. This versatility will allow him to fish for multiple species with one rod. You can find a rod like this for under fifty dollars. 2) I recommend an open faced spinning reel that holds at least three hundred yards of line. Shimano makes many such reels that can be found for under fifty dollars as well. I like Shimano reels for this type of fishing and have used them for many years. 3) A boy’s red wagon or other cheap cart will be a must if there is a long walk to the pier from your vehicle. 4) Your husband will need a bucket that can be used to carry his bait and also used to sit on if needed. 5) He will need a variety of terminal tackle such as hooks, weights and leaders if he will be fishing for species that have large teeth. All together you can easily have a first class setup for under two hundred dollars. You could even reduce this amount in half if you are willing to give up some versatility and perhaps the ability to fish for large species of fish.
