Tuna Trips

Where is the best place to fish for yellowfin tuna in California? I see that you recommend charters from San Diego. Are they for tuna or any kind of fishing? So is San Diego the best place? Also, when is the best time of year to fish for tuna in California?

You can catch some yellowfin in San Diego, but not all year. Yellowfins migrate up and down the coast according to the seasons and water temperatures. In the heat of the summer, they can be found as far north as Morro Bay, and in winter, as far south as Baja. Yellowfins do not cover as much ground as their more oceanic cousins, the Bluefins, and tend to move more up and down the coast, rather than across entire oceans. The best rule of thumb is to look for them farther south in winter, and farther north in summer.

Charter boats offer different kinds of charters. You want a Charter that offers high-speed trolling, specifically for tuna. They will know where to find them, and the best baits to use.

The best places for yellowfin tuna are Bodega Bay, Baja, Monterrey Bay, San Pablo Bay, Pt. Reyes, and Santa Cruz.

Happy fishing.
