Can you tell me a simple saltwater fishing rigging that is pretty universal and will catch most small and medium sized fish?

The most basic, and successful rig for both salt and fresh water bait fishing is very similar to commerical fishermens ‘long-line’ rigs. It can be fished on the bottom, of verically fished anywhere from just under the surface, on down. It can be rigged with up to 3 hooks. Tie a suitable sized bell or pyramid sinker to the bottom of your line. Now, you can either tie two or three dropper loops, 18″ apart, or rig swivel leaders 18″ apart. Then, tie on a suitable hook to each loop/leader. All that’s left is to bait the hooks and drop them in the water. It is not uncommon to catch several fish at once with this type of rig. This is the rig most commonly used on ‘Party’ charter boats, where 20m or 30 people are fishing at once. It is most commonly used to catch various species of snapper, and other med-sized fish. The second type of rig is a single hook bait rig that can also be fished on the botton, or v ertically at any depth. It is called a Grouper rig, and as the name suggests, it is used to catch grouper, and other fish near reefs or cover. Run your line through the center of a slip ‘egg’ sinker and attach it to a swivel. Then put an 18″ leader (wire if fishing for ‘toothy’ critters like moray, etc….) on the other side of the swivel. Attach a suitable hook to the bottom. This rig can even be fished under a bobber. My best bait has always been squid and shrimp. Happy Fishing!
