Bayou Basics

Do you think I will need special saltwater fishing gear when I go to Lousiana? What do you think I should take along?

You can get by with heavy freshwater gear, but it will ruin it. Saltwater rods and reels have stainless-steel bearings, gears, and rod eyes to help counter the corrosive effects of salt water. You’d be much better to buy an inexpensive saltwater set up, or if your not going to do a lot of saltwater fishing, just rent a rig while your there. They will set up with the proper equipment, bait and lures.

My recommendation would be a 10 foot surf rod combo from Eagle Claw or Shakespeare’s Big Water, or Ugly Stik Series (usually under $40.00). It will come with a suitable reel and line. Next, a few stainless steel hooks, some pyramid-type sinkers, a few larger swivels, maybe a large bobber or two, and a box of frozen squid or shrimp, and your good to go for most saltwater fishing, from shore, pier or boat. If you plan to lure fish, then you need a few larger jigs, poppers and crankbaits, mostly in shrimp patterns, squid and blue-minnow colors.

Happy fishing.
